They Might Be Giants (1971)

After the death of his wife, retired judge Justin Playfair creates a fantasy world for himself in which he is the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, even dressing like the character. Out of concern for Justin's money more than his health, his brother Blevins puts him under the care of psychiatrist Dr. Mildred Watson. As Dr. Watson grows fond of Justin, she begins to play along with his theories, eventually becoming an assistant in his investigations.

What critics compared They Might Be Giants to
There are also passing references to Anthony Harvey’s They Might Be Giants—just think of the scene in that film when Dr. Mildred Watson (Joanne Woodward) thinks Holmes (George C. Scott) is dead, or Holmes’ glib response to the line, “I thought you were dead.”

In a very subtle way, Elf kept reminding me of George C. Scott’s They Might Be Giants speech, where he postulates that modern man is all wrong, and that beauty is all around, but hard to find or overlooked (“The earth is shining under the soot”).
