While trying to raise money to prevent his car from being repossessed, George is attracted to Lola, a Frenchwoman who works in a "model shop", an establishment that rents out beautiful pin-up models to photographers. George spends his last twelve dollars to photograph Lola, and discovers that she is as unhappy as he.

What critics compared Model Shop to
If Chazelle’s intention was to celebrate, among other things, the public face of the city, he failed miserably at it—certainly compared with such masterworks, classic and modern, like Jacques Demy’s “ Model Shop ” and Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere.”
In 1969 alone, three major European directors made movies in the American West: Jacques Demy made Model Shop, Agnes Varda made Lions Love, and Michelangelo Antonioni made Zabriskie Point.
