A Jewish man and a Jewish woman meet, and while attracted to each other, find that their worlds are very different. She is the archetypal Jewish American Princess — very emotionally involved with her parents' world and the world they have created for her, while he is much less dependent on his family. They begin an affair which brings more differences to the surface.

What critics compared Goodbye, Columbus to
A scattering of bared female bosoms and one episode of simulated under-the-table masturbation reminiscent of Goodbye, Columbus is all that it takes to do the trick, but the pace and editing never falter and the sex never becomes unduly sordid or turgid.
Getting back to Ashby, the relationships are very specific, not classically universal… even more so than films like The Graduate or Goodbye, Columbus, which have a similar feel, but use specific focus to illuminate a broader idea of coming of age.
