Coogan, an Arizona deputy sheriff goes to New York to pick up a prisoner. While escorting the prisoner to the airport, he escapes and Coogan heads into the city to recapture him.

What critics compared Coogan's Bluff to
The plot is basically Coogan’s Bluff in reverse: an uptight, arrest-happy metropolitan cop Nicholas Angel (Pegg) is promoted to Sergeant, but as part of the deal, he has to relocate from London to the sleepy West Country town of Sandford.
Occasional echoes of "Coogan's Bluff" (1968), the first Eastwood-Siegel feature, are evident while a fast pace is maintained by Carl Pingitore's editing.
In fact, there's very little aesthetically to clearly differentiate it from 1971's Dirty Harry , the ur-action film of the 1970s.
Of all the directors Eastwood has worked with, the two most influential in shaping his screen persona have been Sergio Leone (of the Dollar Westerns) and Siegel (" Coogan's Bluff ," " Dirty Harry ").
