The captain of a submarine sunk by the Japanese during WWII is finally given a chance to skipper another sub after a year of working a desk job. His singleminded determination for revenge against the destroyer that sunk his previous vessel puts his new crew in unneccessary danger.

What critics compared Run Silent, Run Deep to
Between "Das Boot", "Crimson Tide", "Run Silent, Run Deep" and "The Hunt for Red October", the submarine genre has pretty much been given its due.
Instead, he's keen to pay homage to the likes of "Run Silent, Run Deep" and "Destination Tokyo."
As submarine flicks go, "U-571" is midrange: The superior look, headlong action and un-hokey performances (only Harvey Keitel, keyed down to pure ballast, is miscast) are offset by too many oh-come-now moments and a key bit of subterfuge lifted directly from "Run Silent, Run Deep."
Tense submarine movies have big stars - Cary Grant in "Destination Tokyo," Burt Lancaster in "Run Silent Run Deep," Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin in McTiernan's "Hunt for Red October," Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman in "Crimson Tide."
I said, siting "Das Boot," "Run Silent, Run Deep," and making an allowance for the Cold War, "Crimson Tide" and "The Hunt for Red October."
A sort of updated cross between the movie version of "M*A*S*H" and the 1959 classic "Operation Petticoat," "Down Periscope" also sends up just about every submarine movie you can name from "Up Periscope" and "Run Silent, Run Deep" to "The Hunt for Red October" and "Crimson Tide."
Other underwater sea adventures like “Run Silent, Run Deep,” “Crimson Tide,” and “The Hunt for Red October” may come close, but none of them can capture or match its power in unbearable claustrophobic tension.

Combining various elements of “The Cruel Sea,” “The Caine Mutiny,” “Run Silent, Run Deep,” “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Dunkirk” (among others), “Greyhound” is a mostly fine movie that offers a great lead performance through how much is reserved and not said.
