The Cruel Sea (1953)

At the start of World War II, Cmdr. Ericson is assigned to convoy escort HMS Compass Rose with inexperienced officers and men just out of training. The winter seas make life miserable enough, but the men must also harden themselves to rescuing survivors of U-Boat attacks, while seldom able to strike back. Traumatic events afloat and ashore create a warm bond between the skipper and his first officer.

What critics compared The Cruel Sea to
It’s essentially The Cruel Sea on steroids, and it needs the largest screen available and the loudest possible speakers to be truly appreciated.
Combining various elements of “The Cruel Sea,” “The Caine Mutiny,” “Run Silent, Run Deep,” “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Dunkirk” (among others), “Greyhound” is a mostly fine movie that offers a great lead performance through how much is reserved and not said.
This briny war film can take its place among the greats – The Cruel Sea, Western Approaches, Das Boot, In Which We Serve.
With Kristin Scott Thomas as wife Clementine, Ben Mendelsohn as King George VI and Lily James as just-hired secretary Elizabeth Layton, Darkest Hour has just as much for fans of The Crown as lovers of The Cruel Sea.
