Animal Crackers (1930)

The well-known explorer and hunter Captain Spaulding has just returned from Africa, and is being welcomed home with a lavish party at the estate of influential society matron Mrs. Rittenhouse when a valuable painting goes missing. The intrepid Captain Spaulding attempts to solve the crime with the help of his silly secretary Horatio Jamison, while sparring with the anarchic Signor Emanuel Ravelli and his nutty sidekick The Professor.

What critics compared Animal Crackers to
Spaulding, the name a nod to that of Groucho Marx in "Animal Crackers," is played by big, beak-profiled Sid Haig, whose manic, gonzo presence enlivened many a cheap drive-in flick.
As you’d expect, he pushes the boundaries in every frame, occasionally going too far, as is the case with Gyllenhaal’s shameless overacting in a get up – topped by a pith helmet – that recalls Groucho Marx in “Animal Crackers.”
Now mind you, I don’t mean to place Bridesmaids in rarefied company of such classics as Duck Soup, A Night at the Opera or Animal Crackers.
