For horror-savvy viewers, the image of Debbie dangling from the ceiling may suggest a bloodless homage to Dario Argento’s classic “Suspiria,” but the rest of “Ouija” falls somewhere between a tween-friendly version of “The Conjuring” and a live-action episode of “Scooby-Doo.”
In "Ouija," debuting director Stiles White and longtime co-writer Juliet Snowden (2012's " The Possession ") aren't concerned with using the witchboard as anything other than a plot device for a lame knockoff of 2000's " Final Destination ," 1998's Japanese-made "Ringu" and 2002's superb U.S. remake " The Ring ."
Ouija is a low grade, low impact, Final Destination-style horror rip-off that’s notable only for two things.
Co-writer/first-time director Stiles White crafts a padded dud that plays kinda like a PG-13-rated blend of “Final Destination,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and 95 percent of this century’s movies about ghosts.
They succeed, but their efforts unleash a nastier supernatural force that seems determined to take them out one by one, Final Destination-style.
There's a pretty good chance for Ouija to offer up some Final Destination-style dark comedy, the path a film like this absolutely should have taken, but instead what we get is a deadly serious and frightfully dull bore.
Ably stealing her two scenes as a wheelchair-bound mental patient with some unexpected advice for Laine, Lin Shaye (a fixture of the “Insidious” horror franchise) achieves something the rest of “Ouija” only intermittently manages, turning cliches into horror-movie gold.
Even the presence of veteran character actor Lin Shaye, known most recently as the medium from the Insidious movies, in a small role feels less like a loving homage à la Barbara Crampton in You’re Next and more like a happy accident.
Lin Shayne, known to modern horror fans for her role in “Insidious,” is on hand to provide some answers as a long-locked-away mental patient, but not the type the teens are looking for.
Someone died in Debbie’s house and it’s up to Laine to do some Nancy Drew-like investigating, which results in a quite satisfying encounter with a strange woman in a mental institution ( Lin Shaye of the Insidious franchise).
The only genuine eeriness in the film is generated by Insidious’s Shaye as a demented but still corporeal relative to one of the spirits contacted via the troublesome board.
This mishmash of Witchboard, The Ring (2002) and Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) is mostly boring.
Or, at least that's the way it looks in this film, where the game of Ouija becomes just another possessed item , an omen in the style of The Ring’s video tape or Annabelle’s Annabelle.

And the one fashioned by first-time director Stiles White and his co-writer, Juliet Snowden, isn’t much different from Insidious or The Ring, except for the characters’ apparent mandate to keep finding new reasons to play the game, even if that’s plainly unwise.

Clearly, White and Snowden (whose recent writing credits include the exorcism thriller “The Possession” and the Nicolas Cage vehicle “Knowing”) are trying to pare down the plot to a barer-than-bare minimum — as evidenced by the way they quickly introduce characters like Laine’s dad (Matthew Settle) and Debbie’s mom (Robyn Lively), only to hurry them out of town like unwanted chaperones.
The pair had previously worked together on critical disasters “The Possession,” “Knowing” and “Boogeyman.”
“Ouija” suffers from a less than stellar script courtesy of the director and writing partner Juliet Snowden (“The Possession”).
If you are special effects artist-turned-first-time-director Stiles White (co-writing with Juliet Snowden; they last teamed up to script the absurd Jewish exorcism movie The Possession ), and you are stuck making a motion pictured based on a Hasbro board game so non-specific in its application that a non-branded variant of it shows up in three or four haunted house movies every year, maybe you do just throw your hands up and start making fun of yourself.
Jeff Wadlow’s Truth Or Dare is an inconsequential brand of horror likened to Stiles White’s Ouija or more recently John R. Leonetti’s Wish Upon.
