It remains, to date, the only film that David Carradine (who also starred in the 1978 sequel Deathsport) and Sylvester Stallone ever made together.
Deathsport (1978), imagined by Corman as another (but cheaper) Death Race 2000, is essentially a sci-fi Roman gladiator movie in a post-apocalyptic fantasy future with motorcycles, a mad dictator and David Carradine as a mystic desert warrior captured and tossed into the bread-and-circuses arena where political prisoners are served up to the spectacle-hungry population.
Noonan earned his genre bona fides in Michael Mann’s “Manhunter’’ (1986), and Woronov, bless her, has been everywhere from Andy Warhol’s factory to “Rock ’n’ Roll High School’’ (1979) to “Eating Raoul’’ (1982).
Wrong Turn, co-produced and featuring effects work by Oscar-winner Stan Winston (who also, let’s not forget, had a hand in the Andy Kaufman/Bernadette Peters robot love story from hell, Heartbeeps , way back in ’81) begins promisingly, but soon falls prey to achingly obvious genre tropes and rote, hack ’n’ slash bloodletting.
Worst case scenarios include “Zoolander 2,” “Caddyshack II” and, gasp, “Jaws 3D.”
