But Wu has no pretensions of an adaptation or even update (the best of which remains Steve Martin’s “Roxanne”).
The premise isn’t terribly original — yet another comic takeoff on the Cyrano de Bergerac formula mined by so many others including Steve Martin’s brilliant Roxanne.
Every generation gets its own “Cyrano de Bergerac,” from the Steve Martin comedy “Roxanne” to Netflix’s “Sierra Burgess Is a Loser.”
And, in a diversion from the accepted Bergerac plot (also updated in pics like 1987 Steve Martin vehicle Roxanne ), Paul is a more sympathetic, less cruel character than expected, and he naturally falls for Ellie himself, in the most awkward and human of fashions.
In a lovely update on Edmond Rostand’s late 19th-century play “Cyrano de Bergerac” (arguably best known for Steve Martin’s 1987 film version, “Roxanne” – although this version ditches the big nose), Ellie sends poignant letters and text messages to beautiful Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire) on behalf of hapless but sweet-natured Paul Munsky (Daniel Diemer).
At that point, “Titane” enters the territory of John Guare and Fred Schepisi’s 1993 movie “Six Degrees of Separation,” wherein a young scammer introduces himself to a couple as their long lost son.

You were willing to overlook reputed homophobe Denzel Washington talking Will Smith out of lip-locking a dude in “Six Degrees of Separation” to cast him in your gay/AIDS/Maria Callas opus, “Philadelphia.”
And the movie is basically a romantic comedy in the mold of Steve Martin’s “Roxanne,” itself a modern translation of the “Cyrano” formula.
It's one of those great comedy performances (think Steve Martin in "Roxanne" or Eddie Murphy in "The Nutty Professor") that you hope people remember come awards time.
Screenwriter David Hare (Plenty, Wetherby) and director Stephen Daldry (The Hours, Billy Elliot) appear to be overwhelmed by the sheer weight of the themes and ideas being stroked here.
It is not, perhaps, as radical as some have made it out to be — screen Fight for Your Life or The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith for such people — but it’s still an electrifying achievement.
When it works, which is about half the time, Red Sparrow feels like a throwback (albeit a kinkier one) to the cloak-and-dagger thrillers of the Reagan-Bush era, such as Gorky Park and The Russia House.

All that said, Smith is really strong here, recalling his incredible work in 1993's "Six Degrees of Separation."
Which is to say that Ben Thomas is a well-meaning impostor, a persona that echoes not only The Pursuit of Happyness but also Smith's breakthrough movie role in Six Degrees of Separation.
Like Happyness, it depicts a man with a hidden life, a notion central to Smith's debut, Six Degrees of Separation.
He did that 15 years ago in "Six Degrees of Separation," and two years ago in "The Pursuit of Happyness."

It's been clear since 1993's "Six Degrees of Separation" that Mr. Smith has significant talent to match his charm.
His breakthrough was in another serious role, Six Degrees of Separation, and he was excellent in Ali.

There might not be any 20th Century novelist as well-served by dramatic adaptations of his works as British spy author (and former British spy) John le Carré: the not-as-great films taken from his body of work feature such wholly enjoyable thinking-heavy thrillers as The Russia House and The Tailor of Panama , while the great ones include the rather terrific '60s film The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and the outstanding 1979 BBC miniseries Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy , one of the finest things aired on television in that decade.
