She encounters some trouble with a black truck on the highway (shades of Spielberg's Duel), driving aggressively and seemingly singling her out.
A traumatic loss has set her on this near-deserted, forested highway, her pensiveness shifting to alarm when — shades of Steven Spielberg’s “Duel” (1971) — the driver of a mysterious black S.U.V. orchestrates a series of increasingly petrifying encounters.
Alone sometimes suggests what might happen if someone were to merge the principles of slow cinema with a 1970s drive-in-style thriller like Duel or Vanishing Point.
The film's early section recalls Steven Spielberg's classic Duel as it includes a vehicular cat-and-mouse game between Jessica (a very good Jules Willcox, Netflix's Bloodline ) and the driver of a black Jeep Grand Cherokee who seems to be deliberately messing with her.
It’s set-up is a reminder of Spielberg’s “Duel,” until it takes a different turn.

(In this regard, “Upgrade” is the diametrical opposite of a crude and nearly incoherent but sublimely, frenetically inspired movie such as John Hyams’s “Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning,” from 2012) “Upgrade” is a knockoff of an old-line studio production.
It’s rather disappointing that The Smashing Machine is essentially a beat-for-beat recreation of John Hyams’ remarkable 2002 HBO documentary of the same name.
