This thoroughly plotted film draws upon a wealth of influences, most specifically Rear Window, The ‘Burbs, The Conjuring, The Grudge, The Blair Witch Project, and The Evil Dead.
Brett and Drew Pierce are the sons of visual-effects artist Bart Pierce, who did uncredited work on Sam Raimi’s 1981 classic horror flick “The Evil Dead.”
For a horror-movie aficionado, The Wretched is a swirling bloody cocktail of nods to some of the genre’s most beloved titles, such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Rear Window and The Evil Dead .
The other horror elements in the film are derivative of classics: "unwitting unleashing of a demonic force in the forest" from The Evil Dead , "my next-door neighbour is a demon in disguise"from Friday Night , and "my neighbours have become pod people" from Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

As Ben struggles to process his anger over his parents' recent separation, his attention turns to the family in the large house next door, at first just in casual observations and then with an increasing obsessiveness out of Rear Window by way of the original Fright Night with a dash of The Lost Boys .
Much of The Wretched seems to be a missed opportunity, given how its scenario and lead teen John-Paul Howard suggest the potential inverse of The Stepford Wives (1975).
Although Shaun of the Dead (2004) was promoted as the first ever ‘rom-zom-com’, that title should really go to Braindead (1992) or Return of the Living Dead III (1993), while the latter already featured romance between a human and a zombie - something which has since been repeated in, e.g, Boy Eats Girl (2005), Fido (2006) and DeadHeads (2011).
