You can easily visualize a dog-eared copy of Good Will Hunting‘s screenplay sitting next to Fisher’s typewriter as the headstrong Antwone and the savvy Davenport butt heads; during their first few sessions the former sits defiantly silent while the latter tauntingly catches up on paperwork.
Worthy, but dull drama – Washington clearly wanted to make Good Will Hunting, but has made Finding Forrester instead…
By now the "tough kid meets psychiatrist" tale is becoming a genre on its own -- "Good Will hunting," " Finding Forrester ," etc.
This story of a moody, troubled young man uncovering his past has been so cautiously paced that it not only deflates the drama of its protagonist's struggles, but opens itself up to cynicism as well: Antwone Fisher is feel-Good Will Hunting.
At first I thought that it was just the black version of Good Will Hunting, but it turned into so much more.

The film’s breakout, though, is Jurnee Smollett-Bell ( The Great Debaters , 2007) as Black Canary.
The pair get some unexpected help from one of Sionis' employees, Dinah Lance (played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell of “The Great Debaters”).
There are other issues — Charles' ex-wife and daughter are mentioned and then just as quickly forgotten, an awkward bit with a gifted vibrator plays like a "Sex and the City" scene left on the cutting room floor, a thread about a "viral e-mail" at the close of the film is introduced and never explained — that detract from the highs of the light, breezy vibe Washington creates between his two leads.
In supporting roles, Kevin Kline and Derek Luke ( Antwone Fisher ) are hilarious and dead-on, respectively.
Advised to try drama, Lady Bird fits right in with Father Leviatch's (Stephen Henderson, "Fences") troop, immediately zeroing in on the musical production's star Danny (Lucas Hedges, "Manchester by the Sea").
It's a good thing when the worst that can be said of a movie is it should have been longerthis one does nine months in 90 minutes, and one of the stubs is the unfinished story of a theater-teaching priest (Stephen Henderson, Fences) who has a breakdown.
My favorite is the drama teacher, played by Stephen Henderson of “Fences,” who in a quick couple of minutes gives us a glimpse of this guy’s entire life.
In fact, as was the case with "Jerry Maguire", the football scenes are probably the least interesting thing about it.What is truly interesting and incredibly moving about's film, which has more in common with "Antwone Fisher" than with most other sports dramas, is Big Mike ()'s personal life story.
Denzel Washington’s Fences feels very much like a filmed version of an August Wilson production and it’s dead boring outside of the caliber of its lead performances, but Iannucci succeeds where so many s have failed by making the audience a participant.
