Of course their grandmother is Cloris Leachman, who years previous perfected the archetype of the kooky German lady in Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein.
Prochnow is just one of the ringers brought in by the guys, while Cloris Leachman reaquires her wacky German accent from playing Frau Blücher in "Young Frankenstein," and she gets to let loose with a lot of swearing and nastiness that will make you glad that the guys didn't take some of her scenes even further.
The boys train by drinking dozens of beers a night, occasionally receiving advice from Grandpapa's widow, called Great Gram Gram and played by old pro Cloris Leachman in the same tone of Germanic grandeur she brought to "Young Frankenstein" years ago, when she uttered the famous line "Yes . . .
When their grandfather dies, their grandmother (Cloris Leachman, channeling her Frau Blucher from "Young Frankenstein”) gets them to take granddad's ashes back to the old country.
Instead, insert Brian Cox, and let him revise his dedicated but frequently agitated Captain O’Hagan from “Super Troopers” (2001), as Stalker’s mentor.
The vibe they’re going for here is “Super Troopers”- a bunch of idiot policemen goofing off, in ways that are never violent and mostly harmless.
What if Steven Soderbergh directed The Dukes of Hazzard ?
Think The Dukes Of Hazzard meets…well, Oceans 11 – Rebecca Blunt’s script is too “Soderbergh” NOT to be a Soderbergh production.
Take 3: "Hangover" cinematographer Lawrence Cher held down the same job for 2005's "The Dukes of Hazzard," which was shot in New Orleans.
With an approach that feels a bit like if David Lynch made Super Troopers (a prospect that I personally would love to see), Cummings has crafted something very special with The Wolf of Snow Hollow that stands out as a truly exemplary genre-bending comedy that’s even better the second time around.
For every Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan , which augmented a classic Star Trek episode to fit a larger screen, there are far too many Bewitched , Get Smart , and The Dukes of Hazzard … feature-length extensions of small-screen fare that didn’t warrant the jump.
Beyond "Jump Street," let's see … we've gritted our teeth through "The Dukes of Hazzard" and a dozen more, most recently "CHiPs."
Any old fool can make a top cop action spoof--just look at those dunderheads behind "Super Troopers" and "Reno 911!"--but it takes real talent to make a good one.
For example, even though I haven’t recommended any Broken Lizard movie (Super Troopers, Beerfest), I’ll still line up to see their next one, even if it’s Dukes of Hazzard.
They're both very enjoyable, but their frequently OTT scenes disrupt the otherwise believable emotional reality of the film, and they don't do much with the idea of 'irresponsible cops' that hasn't been done before in less effective comedies like Broken Lizard's Super Troopers.
And with Superbad, Rogen continues to show off his writing skills, delivering one of the most viciously funny movies since Super Troopers.
One of them is the guy who ate all that weed in Super Troopers.
What happens instead is a lot of Super Troopers -grade stoner gags tied together by a performance from Franco that has the misfortune of being familiar and human in the middle of a lot of low-aspiring blarney.
The script is far more conventional than its indie pop soundtrack (DeVotchKa and Sufjan Stevens provide the highlights) would have you believe, right down to unfortunate blips on the narrative radar involving porn magazines and state troopers that could have come straight from Super Troopers and a moment of sibling bonding that's all but gift wrapped.
