Plot
The worldwide appearance of monsters (or "Titans," as they are called here) echoes Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla: Final Wars.
That said, it’s probably the most kaiju-esque “Godzilla” movie since “Godzilla: Final Wars” sent the lovable lizard into hibernation in 2004.
Among purist Tohoites, the Emmerich monster is derisively referred to as “Zilla”; in 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars, he reappears as part of a series-record-setting 13-monster invasion unleashed by an intergalactic tyrant, but lasts about a minute against the One True Godz , who hurls him into the Sydney Opera House before disintegrating him, a finishing move that doubled as an act of film criticism (and architecture criticism, I guess).
On paper, this adrenaline-surged amalgam of Italian zombie programmers and Tsui Hark action yarns can't miss, and admittedly, much of the action is very well staged, mixing athletic sparring with Sam Raimi-styled camera tricks and state of the art gore right out of Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive"/"Braindead".
Of all possible outcomes for the new American-made Godzilla , one that I wasn't prepared for at all was that, at the macro level, it would have exactly the same structural problems that the last Godzilla film, 2004's Godzilla: Final Wars did.
Wes Craven’s The People Under The Stairs and the French Livide have played this reverse-the-threat game – though another contemporary run of movies have regular criminals clashing with outright maniacs (No One Lives, The Neighbour, The Collector).
