Though this makes the film initially feel more like a remake of Lamberto Bava’s Demons 2 or a [REC] rip-off (or, heck, even a nod to that terrible Critters sequel with li’l Leo DiCaprio in his film debut), the eventual appearance of the Necronomicon means we’re clearly in Lovecraft country by way of Sam Raimi and his Deadites.
Evil Dead Rise picks up on the tone and style set down by the 2013 reboot of Evil Dead and places it in a high-rise building, a setting that frankly has been hungry for demons to run through since 1986’s Demons 2 .

The post-modernity extends off-screen: Dario Argento produced, and the director is the son of Mario (Black Sabbath) Bava.
Other more or less obvious sources of inspiration include Dawn of the Dead , such Italian horror flicks as Lamberto Bava's Demons and Michele Soavi's The Church , Terence Malick's Badlands, and the novels of Jim Thompson.
Inglourious Basterds and 1985's Demons may have used their cinema setting to great effect but during Contagion you can sense the anxiety that comes from human proximity, let alone the angst accompanying an audience member’s cough.
The highlight of the disc’s extras is the interview with Argento, which is actually more of a brief, behind-the-scenes documentary, including stills, clips, and comments from Argento’s assistant director Lamberto Bava (who went on to direct the Argento-produced Demons and Demons 2.) The interview is presented with the subjects speaking in their native language, and viewers have the choice of watching with or without English subtitles.
