“Mid90s'” captures a people and a place with the ring of the authentic, a grimly realistic depiction of skateboard culture in the working class LA where it blew up in the “Dogtown and Z-Boys” era.
“Mid90s” is like “Dazed and Confused” (1993) crossed with “Kids” (1995), “Freaks and Geeks” (1999), “Dogtown and Z-Boys” (2001), and “Slackers” (2002), with a sprinkling of this year’s “Eighth Grade.”
I guess it's fair to say that Ash Brannon (Toy Story 2) and Chris Buck's mockumentary Surf's Up is a successful send-up of the Endless Summer-style documentary recently revived by Stacy Peralta's Riding Giants --but its triumph as such is relegated to so microscopic a genre that its usefulness as satire is negligible.
It's a tiki shrine of surfer cultism, with funny and fond spoofs of beach boy documentaries like “Riding Giants” (during a huge curler, we hear the voices of actual surfers).
Strange as it sounds, though, Surf's Up exists at the unlikely intersection between those films and recent arthouse surf-culture documentaries like Riding Giants and Step Into Liquid.
Daniel Mindel introduces a more radioactively luminous palette to proceedings — one of several ways in which Webb has dropped many of the real-world affectations of the first film (gone is Parker’s skateboard, though he still has a “Dogtown and Z-Boys” poster on his wall) in favor of a more high-key comicbook story world.
His room is even full of energy, with movie posters for “Blow Up” and “Dogtown and Z-Boys” making way for a frenzied map of clues left behind by Peter’s father.
