Darabont's adaptation of a Stephen King novella is a throwback to the kind of serious, literate drama Hollywood used to make ( Birdman of Alcatraz , say) though the big spiritual resolution takes some swallowing - ditto the colour-blind relationships within the prison and the violent disavowal of any homosexual implications.
Even better than "Birdman of Alcatraz," "The Shawshank Redemption" creates the world of overbearing closure that is prison.

Barrymore overdoes the tomboy schtick “cool” girls have been required to do since the late ’90s (something about Mary, as I recall): she eats like a pig, drinks like a fish, rules at video games, loves The Shawshank Redemption, and takes monster bong hits.
Space allows the characters to have a sense of humor about themselves and time to indulge in the goofy giddiness of a new relationship, whether Garrett impersonates Morgan Freeman after learning Erin’s favorite movie is “The Shawshank Redemption” or Erin grins and throws out a hot dog she was about to eat after Garrett calls and asks her to dinner.
They drink, eat wings, play trivia, smoke pot and bond over “The Shawshank Redemption” and “Top Gun.”
As Erin and Garrett struggle to stretch lust across 3,000 miles via Skype, it's hard to maintain much interest in the fate of their union, in part because what they're like is so predicated on what they like, and what they like—they bond over YouTube memes, bar trivia, and The Shawshank Redemption—is so fucking boring.

Oftentimes incorrectly assumed to be depressing as opposed to uplifting (due to the prison violence and sporadic iniquities akin to those in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”), it is, in actuality, a magnificently hopeful, inspiring work of art.
Bob Gunton harkens to villains like Nurse Ratchet from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest …you just love to hate him.
But to call "The Shawshank Redemption" a prison picture is as accurate as calling "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" a hospital picture.

Over the years, it has attained a classic status that rivals “Casablanca,” “Citizen Kane,” and “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
And for a viewer like me, it takes a lot to get me to care about characters this much - in fact, only It's A Wonderful Life effected me this much.

Someone has finally succeeded where John Carpenter failed with The Fog. Darabont, who was an established screenwriter before trying his hand at directing with 1994's The Shawshank Redemption, has made four motion pictures.
It sounds suspiciously like a new name for yet another remake of John Carpenter's classic, The Fog .

There is good stuff to be found, including plenty of character beats (Lil Rel Howery plays a grocery store clerk whose research for his sci-fi novel makes him a comparative expert on the events) and a trip to the grocery store that will remind you of The Mist.
Frank Darabont’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Mist seems to be a huge influence here, too – there’s even an entire sequence set inside a supermarket, as well as mention of one neighbor suing another over a property dispute – both of which feature prominently in Darabont’s flick.
A trip to the supermarket for supplies (they black out the windows of the car and rely on the GPS to navigate the route) results in a harrowing sequence that actually does echo a horror film based on a Stephen King book: “The Mist” (2007).

Coffey is the virtuous innocent -- like a less hapless Lenny from "Of Mice and Men" with a few extra IQ points.
Like Lenny in Of Mice And Men, Duncan's character, John Coffey, is a simple-minded giant who is gentle as a lamb, afraid of the dark, and occasionally bursts into tears.
"The Green Mile" reminds one of John Steinbeck's classic story "Of Mice and Men" because of its theme and the illiterate giant at its center.

A historical courtroom drama making a full-throated appeal for criminal justice reform, “Just Mercy” recalls '90s movies like “A Time to Kill” or “The Shawshank Redemption,” a throwback to the sort of serious, adult drama studio pics that don’t really get made anymore in this era of multi-billion-dollar franchises.
For those who have never seen this type of courtroom drama, never exposed to “The Caine Mutiny Court Martial,” “Conviction” with Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell, “The Green Mile” based on a Stephen King novel, or “The Shawshank Redemption,” will be particularly riveted by this intense drama.
It’ll be interesting to hear people compare this to The Green Mile and in many ways, Just Mercy shows how derivative and racist The Green Mile truly is.

One of the film’s most wrenching scenes is right out of “The Green Mile,” when Stevenson witnesses the execution of Herbert Richardson (Rob Morgan, TV’s “Stranger Things”), a troubled war veteran whose fatal injection goes horribly wrong.
Racism, the structural inequality of the incarceration system, and the inhumanity of the death penalty are issues that have all been tackled in movies before, from To Kill A Mockingbird to The Green Mile , but rarely if ever with the frankness and immediacy that Just Mercy brings to McMillian and Stevenson’s journeys.
Adopting the jerky handheld technique from the Sci-Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica", but apparently learning nothing from the teachings of "Jaws", Mr. Darabont lets his creatures roam free in broad daylight in all their computer-generated fakery.
Forgoing the lessons learned in Jaws into teasing us with the monster (thus making the unknown of the imagination far more frightening), Darabont gives us a glance early on.
The 21st century has seen a mini-boom in such spiritual cousins: The Mist (2007), Upstream Color (2013), The Void (2016), The Endless (2017), and Annihilation (2018) all come to mind as films that “get” Lovecraft in a manner that is not evident in more explicit adaptations of his work.
Mainstream horror/sci-fi movies like Alien, The Thing, and The Mist borrow heavily from Lovecraftian design but it’s modern filmmakers like Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead who have most dedicated their craft to a Lovecraftian tilt, with films like Resolution, Spring, and, most notably, The Endless, all playing with huge cosmic truths and the fragility of humanity sanity when confronted with these larger-than-life ideas.
The film reminds me of the Dorothy McGuire character and her socialite circle in Gentleman's Agreement, whose subliminal anti-Semitism, that film made clear, was no less injurious or excusable merely for being subliminal, for failing even to recognize itself as a form of prejudice.

Almost seemingly channeling Morgan Freeman’s work in “The Shawshank Redemption,” Harrelson becomes a through-line for the audience to engage while then echoing Mahershala Ali’s work in “Moonlight.”
Even such an accomplished prison film as The Shawshank Redemption fell for this sentimental view of life behind bars (I much prefer the balls-to-the-walls spit and snarl of HBO's Oz), and now there is Life, which tries to turn the subject into a comedy vehicle for Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence.
Let's just say the movie, which has some passing similarities with "The Shawshank Redemption," spans two lifetime sentences.
It starts off as a wacky period piece set in the Prohibition era of 1932 (with echoes of Eddie's '89 bomb Harlem Nights), but then it turns into The Shawshank Redemption.
Dragging its feet between I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang (released the same year that Life finds its "murderers" caught up in the criminal injustice system) and the camaraderie and bleakness of The Shawshank Redemption, Life instead is a sailboat stranded in a windless sea, a comedy slant on The Bridge on the River Kwai sinking without the bridge or the river.
While most are dramatic -- think of Paul Newman in "Cool Hand Luke" and Clint Eastwood in "Escape From Alcatraz" -- some of have been funny -- such as "Stir Crazy" (Gene Wilder, Richard Pryor) and "The Longest Yard" (Burt Reynolds) -- while others are nothing short of outstanding -- such as "Papillon" (Steve McQueen) and the incomparable "The Shawshank Redemption" (Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman).
What lies beyond that thick, rolling fog that swallows everything at night seems like a direct reference to John Carpenter’s The Fog or a vague nod to Stephen King’s The Mist .
A Sheep Without a Shepherd risks being a referential exercise as it opens with a fantasy jailbreak sequence which segues into Weijie’s enthusiastic explanation of the montage technique while posters for The Shawshank Redemption (1994) and Catch Me If You Can (2002) are placed in the background at key moments.
A networking specialist whose lack of formal education is offset by his almost encyclopedic knowledge of cinema, Li Weijie (Xiao Yang) spends most of his free time in a small eatery in the village of Chanban, quoting films like The Shawshank Redemption and discussing plot elements with kindly Uncle Song (Paul Chun).
(Andy’s cell is bedecked with a poster of Hayworth in all her Gilda glory.)
One of the film's best scenes has the inmates watching Gilda (1946).
Had the screenplay by co-writers Rupert Wyatt and Damian Lewis followed a linear plot, it would have been rather standard, bland and uninspired, especially given that there are so many classic, prison escape movies that tread the same water, such as Escape from Alcatraz, The Shawshank Redemption, Cool Hand Luke, The Grand Illusion and Papillon, among others.
No one will mistake The Escapist for Robert Bresson’s contemplative A Man Escaped nor Frank Darabont’s sentimental favorite The Shawshank Redemption.
