The film “The Hunt,” not to be confused with the 2012 Danish film of the same name starring Mads Mikkelsen, had been shelved by Universal last year because of sensitivity issues related to the film’s central plot of humans using other humans as prey – nothing new, but back in the day Fay Wray was in “The Most Dangerous Game” (1932) or Cornel Wilde was “The Naked Prey” (1965), Charles Whitman had yet to show the world what human-on-human carnage was really about.
The concept is not a new one to fans of the 1965 thriller “The Naked Prey,” or the 1932 action feature “The Most Dangerous Game,” before it (based on the classic 1924 short story of the same name).
Had Gibson followed the cue of other less self-important variations of The Most Dangerous Game, such as The Naked Prey, Surviving the Game and Hard Target, and cut to the chase more quickly, Apocalypto would have been a far more satisfying experience.
He pushes past the grisly frontier brutalities of “Black Robe” and “The Last of the Mohicans,” using the adrenaline of “Predator” and “The Naked Prey.”
However, to be fair, like "The Naked Prey" there isn't a lot of dialogue.
An indigenous remake of The Naked Prey, Gibson and screenwriter Farhad Safinia's story focuses on Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), a young hunter whose village is ruthlessly attacked by Mayan warriors.
The satire on extreme TV shows is familiar and the situation of men and women as the human prey for hunters has been used in numerous movies (Schwarzenegger on the run for his life in The Running Man, for instance, Cornel Wilde chased across 19th-century South Africa by his native captors in The Naked Prey).
And for most of the fairly terrific 30 minutes that follow, “Riddick” resembles nothing so much as an outer-space remake of the 1966 Cornel Wilde adventure “The Naked Prey,” with Diesel on the run from all manner of carnivorous creatures, including “alien jackals” that look like the offspring of a zebra and a pit bull.
This man-versus-nature opening segment plays like a laughable, tension-free sci-fi variation of The Naked Prey .
And appropriate to such a famous story, Hollywood has made it into any number of movies and imitations like "Run for the Sun," "A Game of Death," "The Naked Prey," and the like.
So claims the narration at the beginning of Cornel Wilde’s The Naked Prey (1966), a mildly pretentious (the characters don’t even have names; they’re just types) African-set variant on The Most Dangerous Game (1932).
One also imagines that they consumed Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai and countless films by Sergio Leone, perhaps even some slasher movies and classics of the “hunting humans” sub-genre, such as The Most Dangerous Game and The Naked Prey.
