Plot
Compare Dennis Potter’s great mini-series of the nineteen-eighties, “The Singing Detective,” and you will see much the same setup—a wry leading man with a skin disease, inspired by a furious creative itch—rendered with unstinting vigor.
Tarsem borrowed the film’s bifurcated structure, and its plot generally, from the 1981 Bulgarian film Yo Ho Ho, although the BBC’s 1986 miniseries The Singing Detective (remade in the U.S. as a feature film in 2003) makes a more familiar comparison.

That was equally true of Dennis Potter, the creator of “Pennies from Heaven” and “The Singing Detective,” who I suspect would have warmed to this movie, and especially to the sight of Eliza, suddenly spirited from her kitchen table onto a monochrome dance floor.
Michael Mitnick (who has never written a feature screenplay before) and Robert B. Weide (who has written one, the 1996 “Mother Night”) don’t answer obvious questions.
The 19-year-old Dunst has appeared in more than 30 films in her career � some interesting ("The Virgin Suicides," "Mother Night"), some terrible ("Bring It On"), but most simply forgettable ("Dick," "Small Soldiers").

I hope Gambon, who proved to be one of the world's most compelling actors in the television series of Dennis Potter's The Singing Detective, warms up to the role of the dignified wizard by the fifth Potter movie, where he becomes an integral and active part of the story.
