I’d like to end by saying that this is a bit of an underrated film that holds up solid to the test of time with its obvious similarities to Alfred Hitchcock’s film Rear Window (1954) that played as some inspiration.
Eventually, Franklin had the idea that the killer wouldn’t be the truck driver, but the driver would be the witness to a series of murders committed by someone out there, in the vein of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window .
Road Games is inspired largely by the works of Alfred Hitchcock, in particular, the brilliant Rear Window .
The parallels between this film and Hitchcock’s Rear Window are undeniable and director Richard Franklin even stated that he wanted to make Rear Window on the road.
If you’ve seen 1954’s REAR WINDOW, there can be no doubt which Hitchcock movie Franklin and De Roche have taken as inspiration.REAR WINDOW is also a film about a hero stuck in an enclosed space, who catches wind of a crime and is deemed crazy by the authorities, leaving him to take matters into his own hands.
What cements Roadgames‘ Hitchcockian overtones, though, is the way Franklin borrows the basic premise of Rear Window (1954), replacing its apartment block window setting with the windscreen of a truck.

Sure, we've had "Monkey Shines," "Link," and, of course, multiple non-horror films featuring "King Kong" (if you even count those), but a regular killer ape is surprisingly not a subject that many filmmakers have delved into.
Harking back to Richard Franklin’s Link and George A. Romero’s Monkey Shines, the main menace is a murdering monkey.
I’m old enough to remember the 1986 Richard Franklin thriller, “Link,” which starred Elisabeth Shue and Terrence Stamp and is just like this movie, only with one teenager instead of a half dozen.
Director Gina Prince-Bythewood ( Love & Basketball , Cloak & Dagger ) knows what works and exploits those elements.
Prince-Bythewood, while still best known for her singular romantic drama “Love & Basketball,” is no stranger to comic book work, having been long attached to direct “Silver and Black” (a Sony production meant to team up Spiderman stars Silver Sable and Black Cat) and even directing an episode of Marvel’s short-lived “Cloak & Dagger” series.
Prince-Bythewood, usually associated with romantic dramas like Love and Basketball or Beyond the Lights , isn’t the first name you’d think of for a film like this (though her work directing the series premiere of Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger showed she was more than ready).
But the thing about the film is its sneaky similarity to "Psycho II" (1983).
Franklin is best known for co-producing the film The Blue Lagoon (1980) as well as directing the films Patrick (1978), Psycho II (1983), Cloak & Dagger (1984), and Link (1986).
De Roche loved the content of the script and expressed his desire to write a film with a similar plot but set on a moving vehicle.[2] He developed the idea with Franklin in Fiji, where the latter was co-producing The Blue Lagoon (1980).
He discusses directing the movie Patrick (1978) and producing The Blue Lagoon (1980).
De Roche loved what he read and wanted to make a similar movie but within a moving vehicle, so the dup worked on the first draft while Franklin was producing The Blue Lagoon .
Franklin followed this by producing The Blue Lagoon , another massive international success.
