Laura’s tampering with past events could have gotten all dark like The Butterfly Effect .
Choices she makes and things she shares with Harrison have a ripple effect into a new present timeline, changing not just Harrison, but aspects of Laura’s life and those around her. Press Play becomes a sort of rom-com riff on The Butterfly Effect , and I was completely invested in Laura and Harrison’s relationship.
The film is enjoyable in fits and bursts but if you’re looking for another time travel story that deals with grief and the importance of spending time with the people you love, you might want to re-watch About Time , as that film deals with these subjects in a more thorough and emotionally resonant way.
