It’s hard to watch René Féret’s historical drama Mozart’s Sister without thinking of the Oscar-winning 1984 biopic Amadeus , which uses Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as a springboard to consider the sad case of those who can recognize genius, but can’t replicate it.
In heavily outlining the tragedies and injustices that befell the musically gifted older sister of Wolfgang "Amadeus," writer-director René Féret underplays the most interesting elements in this story of Maria Anna "Nannerl" Mozart.
It’s not an easy crowd-pleaser like Miloš Forman’s Amadeus (1984), nor is it as deliberately odd as Paul Morrissey’s Beethoven’s Nephew (1985), but René Féret’s Mozart’s Sister invites comparisons to both.
