As was the case with the fondly remembered (by some) but quite mediocre “Space Jam” from 1996, the spiritual sequel isn’t so much a movie as it is a product placement mashup utilizing the technology of the day to combine live action with animation, with a slow buildup to a climactic hoops contest that lasts longer than the final minutes of an NBA playoff game.
The learning-to-be-a-better-parent theme means "A New Legacy" requires more acting from James than the original "Space Jam" did from Michael Jordan.
It took 25 years for Warner Bros. to get around to making a sequel to their blockbuster hit Space Jam (1996), the live-action/animation hybrid that teamed a squad of Looney Tunes with basketball superstar Michael Jordan.
At one point in the film, which bears, um, certain similarities to “Space Jam,” the 1996 film starring Michael Jordan and a bevy of Looney Tunes characters, LeBron James is explaining the situation to Bugs Bunny (voice of Jeff Bergman).
The first effort, combining live and animated action, “Space Jam,” also starring human Michael Jordan, was a popular enough effort that has had a pretty good shelf life.
Fully anticipating another gimmick-driven shoulder-shrug of a live-action/cartoon hybrid like 1996's "Space Jam," I hadn't put enough faith in director Joe Dante ("Gremlins," "Small Soldiers"), who has been a rabid aficionado of Warner Bros. cartoons his whole life, and who poured every ounce of that enthusiasm into this screwball flick.
Much has been made of this movie being not Space Jamthat is, its producers claim it is truer to the original essence of Bugs, Daffy, etc., than that 1996 movie co-starring Michael Jordan, which turned them all into basketball stars and did away with most of their traditional settings, conflicts, and personalities.
In the right hands, this would have been at least as competent a film as Space Jam.

Indeed, "Space Jam" could make its most profound impact if it was juxtaposed with the outrageous, utterly guileless stereotypes of Warners' most notorious cartoon, 1943's "Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs."
If you're old enough to relish your encounters with such classic shorts as What's Opera, Doc? or Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2 Century, then Space Jam is little more than a feeble extension.
The decision to keep them animated, placed onto a live-action backdrop like another Space Jam or Who Framed Roger Rabbit , is an admirable strategy.
The mash-up style of animation and live action feels less assured than apparent predecessors Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Space Jam, however, Tom and Jerry certainly surpasses some more recent contemporaries like 2009’s Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Either way, this hilariously meta reboot — excuse me, comeback — is everything the recent Space Jam sequel desperately attempted but failed to be.
As are the other basketball-world stars making cameos; Trae Young, Tobias Harris, Doc Rivers, Kenny Smith, Julius Erving, and so forth don’t gum up the works à la Space Jam , but add a welcomed realism.

Then again, the film doesn’t hesitate to just let Swiper walk like a human (since he walks like that in the show), so it falls into a strange middle ground that reminds me of Space Jam .
If there’s a Hall of Fame for live-action actors excelling in communication with animated counterparts, Gleeson is in the conversation with the Bob Hoskins/“Roger Rabbit,” Michael Jordan/“Space Jam” and Don Knotts/“The Incredible Mr. Limpet” holy trinity.
"Who Framed Roger Rabbit" meets "Hoosiers"!
The idea behind Space Jam is simple: to resuscitate the Looney Tunes characters in a big way—and on the back of Robert Zemeckis' 1988 hit live-action-animation hybrid Who Framed Roger Rabbit—by pairing the likes of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck with Michael Jordan.
The co-stars do interact, but not to the extent that the live actors and toons mixed it up the vastly superior "Who Framed Roger Rabbit."
That said, Space Jam still is a technical marvel -- the best blend of reality and paint since Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
But "Space Jam," produced by Ivan ("Ghostbusters") Reitman and directed by Joe Pytka, doesn�t have the unforgettable pizazz of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," which used human-toon interaction to more imaginative advantage.
One minute it’s a more realistic, epic animated film in the vein of Ratatouille, the next it’s Space Jam.
A fun treat for the little ones, which is likely to be adored in the same way this writer’s generation has come to embrace the likes of Hook, Space Jam, Flubber, Casper, The Grinch and Jumanji.
And unlike “Space Jam,” another sensory overload brimming with IP love, it never feels tacky or put on.
