Mostly, the film — with its giant breakaway dollhouse-like set (which might have been inspired by Julien Temple’s 1986 film Absolute Beginners) and its gadgets and Rube Goldberg designed gags — has a distinctly Anderson vibe to it.
In fact, it’s only later on, when they’re dressing like Eurotrash and screwing, that they become pretty disposable (kind of like how “Earth Girls are Easy” just isn’t as much fun once Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans lose the dayglo body hair).
"Trainspotting" reads like a cross between Colin MacInnes' "Absolute Beginners" and "A Clockwork Orange."
Stars Ralph Fiennes, Uma Thurman, and Sean Connery may seem well-positioned to breathe life into a tongue-in-cheek action pic derived from these most stylish, rough-and-tumble icons of British urbanity, but who thought that director Jeremiah Chechik (1996's atrocious Diabolique ) and screenwriter Don MacPherson (Absolute Beginners) were the ones to pull it off?
