Submarines and movies were made for each other, or so I thought at the age of nine when I first saw The Enemy Below.
It is fairly obvious that writer-director Jonathan Mostow was trying to re-create the dramatic tension of the king of the submarine genre, "Das Boot," but he's not in the same ocean, nor does it reach the level of "The Hunt for Red October," "The Enemy Below," "The Abyss" and other top-line films featuring submarines.
And, in a touch that evokes 1957’s The Enemy Below , with Robert Mitchum and Curd Jürgens , Krause is repeatedly taunted over the radio by a U-Boat commander who somehow knows a lot about their mission.
Hanks has skippered a picture that stands with the best of them, movies like “The Enemy Below,” an action-packed thriller with pathos, patriotism and military professionalism.
While not quite up to the level of "The Enemy Below" (the Robert Mitchum American destroyer vs. German U-boat spectacle), this entertaining film leaves little time for thought.

Themes
John McTiernan's adaptation of the Tom Clancy novel is a classic submarine movie (yes, it's a subgenre...yuk yuk yuk)—like seafaring predecessors The Enemy Below and The Caine Mutiny, this one's unapologetic about its undiluted testosterone (Gates McFadden of Star Trek: The Next Generation has a blink-and-you'll-miss-her cameo as Jack's Ryan's wife Caroline).
