What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: The Mad Woman’s Ball sometimes feels like a feminist take on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest , but there’s so much more to it than that.
Imagine Milos Forman’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest , reimagined in 19th Century Paris, in an all-female institution, and you’ll have a pretty good notion of what to expect.
Perceiving her as the antagonist, we’re tapping into familiar tropes, in particular, Mildred Ratched (Louise Fletcher) and Randle Patrick McMurphy (Jack Nicolson), from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (Forman, 1975).
Those who do not fit into society—think of Randle Patrick McMurphy from the movie “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” who chose to serve a sentence in a psychiatric hospital instead of prison—are often bullied and persecuted by those who are in charge of supervising them.
What follows is something of a Gallic, feminist One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest with a supernatural twist, both engaging and disturbing.
It may evoke other period dramas like Les Misérables and even Dance of the 41 at times.
But in each case they work within the context of the film, in addition to paying homage some of the great teen cinema, be it The Virgin Suicides or Rebel Without a Cause, that’s come before.
Think of Breatheas a distant European cousin to the fraught teen movies of Larry Clark as well as Catherine Hardwicke’s Thirteen, stories of imperiled youth, loneliness and volatile sentiment.
