Penguins have been having a good couple of years at the cineplex: They became celebrities in March of the Penguins, they tap-danced in Happy Feet, and starting today they'll be riding the waves in Surf's Up.
The fact that everyone's talking about global warming also makes the timing right, especially since March of the Penguins made a hundred million clams.
Are they more endearing than the very cool birds of “March of the Penguins”?
Though it doesn't have the rousing musical numbers of Happy Feet or the fascinating saga and emotion of March of the Penguins, Surf's Up is yet another entertaining film featuring penguins.
The obvious, if commercial high-end, subject matter benchmarks for Surf's Up are 2005's $125m-grossing documentary March Of The Penguins and last season's $380m worldwide smash Happy Feet, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Film.
Damn those Happy Feet —and, for that matter, March of the Penguins .
The script had many cooks (Monsters, Inc./Monsters University writers Daniel Gerson and Robert L. Baird; Frozen story writer Paul Briggs; Tangled story artist Joseph Mateo; March of the Penguins writer Jordan Roberts and Don Hall himself), and the result is a lot of inspired narrative turns and gags offered in episodic increments.
But the man who adapted "Big Hero 6" from the Marvel Comic of the same name -- screenwriter Jordan Roberts -- is way beyond most in putting humanistic appeal on the frontline of his narratives as he did in his 2005 "March of the Penguins."
Directors Don Hall (2011's " Winnie the Pooh ") and Chris Williams (2008's " Bolt "), along with co-writers Jordan Roberts (2005's " March of the Penguins "), Robert L. Baird (2013's " Monsters University ") and Daniel Gerson (2001's " Monsters, Inc. "), broach certain subjectslike the process of grief and moving forward following the passing of a loved onein a way that, thankfully, have not been sidelined or homogenized for sensitive modern audiences.
The film was co-directed by Don Hall, writer of "The Emperor's New Groove" and Disney's "Tarzan," and Chris Williams, writer-director of the underrated animated "Bolt" — from a screenplay by writers whose credits include "March of the Penguins" and "Monsters University."
It starts with a parody of “March of the Penguins” and other penguin-based documentaries- complete with Werner Herzog voice cameo!- is a highlight.
