In a world where movies like State of Grace, Carlito’s Way, The Departed, Eastern Promises, and other dark double crossing mafia dramas didn’t exist, We Own the Night might have worked.
In September of 1990, director Phil Joanou's Irish-gangster drama State of Grace had the misfortune of opening in limited release just one week prior to Martin Scorsese's GoodFellas opening in wide release.
Instead, "The Addams Family" marks the directing debut of Barry Sonnenfeld, an innovative cinematographer whose jazziest work includes "Misery," "Raising Arizona" and "Three O'Clock High."
However, in spite of the improvement, it still just misses ranking in the upper echelon on mob movies such as GoodFellas, Casino, The Godfather films, State of Grace and Once Upon a Time in America.
