What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Horse Girl exists somewhere in the median between northbound indie quirk (Duplass joints Cyrus and The Skeleton Twins courted similar vibes) and southbound insanity (I caught whiffs of 2001 , Under the Skin and Twin Peaks in this, believe it or not).
In Under the Skin , a clear inspiration, the audience is made to feel unease at the world constructed around Scarlett Johansson’s man-eating alien.
The script by Baena and Alison Brie (who previously co-wrote Horse Girl) feels like a mix of Eat Pray Love and Eyes Wide Shut, as they play on the darker elements of being trapped on a getaway that doesn’t exactly match the brochure.
Instead the filmmakers choose to run riot, spinning off in all directions before settling into a poor man’s “Eyes Wide Shut.”

Spin Me Round makes for a perplexing, yet entertaining fusion between Eat, Pray, Love and Eyes Wide Shut .
In recent years, Adam Sandler has gained begrudging respect for convincing studios to send him and his pals off to pleasant locations to make bland comedies like Grown Ups, but there's a sneaking suspicion that Jeff Baena pulled a similar trick with Spin Me Round, a shapeless satire that seems like a decent reason to spend a few weeks in Italy with some pals.
Those looking forward to a scenic view of Italy might want to stick to films like Luca and Under The Tuscan Sun ; Amber is promised a stay in a villa but she and her fellow Tuscany Grove managers are restricted to a crappy motel.
