There’s also the incredible soundtrack, the beauty of seeing it in 70 mm, and Anderson’s script reminiscent of teenage classics like Dazed and Confused , Empire Records , and The Last American Virgin .
While there are certainly echoes of other teen films, Dazed and Confused and The Last American Virgin come to mind, Licorice Pizza is its own thing because only Paul Thomas Anderson can tell this story in this way.

Themes
Believing that there might be an underlying sweetness and truth to go along with the raunchiness, a 'la 1982's "The Last American Virgin," 1999's " American Pie " and 2008's " Sex Drive ," is nothing but a setup for disappointment.
Focusing more on the 'sex' aspect, rather than the romance one (even though there is a bit of that too), "American Pie" is more reminiscent of the various '80s raunch-fests, like "Porky's" or "The Last American Virgin."
The time was the early 80s, when films like Porky's, Losin' It and The Last American Virgin celebrated the adolescent male in all his sex-obsessed glory.
Whereas the 80's were filled to the brim with raunchy teen-related comedies like Animal House, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Last American Virgin, Porky's (I can go on ...), Hollywood doesn't seem to have the balls anymore to tell it like it is.
Having apparently forgotten everything about filmmaking in the decade since The Daytrippers, director Greg Mottola cedes auteur duties to producer Apatow and Knocked Up star Seth Hogen, who based his screenplay on his own growing pains (and, possibly, memories of The Last American Virgin).

Plot
With a title like The 40 Year Old Virgin (and with a marketing campaign that borders on genius), you know that, as with other "losin' it" pictures (Losin' It, Revenge of the Nerds , Hardbodies, The Last American Virgin , and on and on), the hero's going to get laid--most often to a fireworks accompaniment (or selections from Hair, as the case may be).
