Tate’s misunderstood absence does, indeed, feel like that period of time in The Notebook when Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie (Rachel McAdams) were separated.
A rushed scene towards the end (with characters growing old together) tries to capture a snippet of the emotionality in 2004’s The Notebook .
Even Reese Witherspoon (heavily involved in the film via Hello Sunshine) knows something about a good Southern love triangle (see: Sweet Home Alabama ).
And the conclusion, hoping to present a stunning revelation or two, is so outrageously unconvincing (perhaps even more so than in “Just Cause” or “The Power of the Dog” or “Primal Fear”); it hardly matters that the denouement is so pointlessly overlong that it threatens to make viewers give up on ever learning the truth – or feel contented with such a storytelling void.
