When Annie’s ex Gil (Michael Rosenbaum) gets suspicious enough about Charlie to blow his cover online and get the bad guys back after him, a “True Romance”-esque journey across country ensues.
"Hit & Run" is closest in tone to the Tarantino-penned "True Romance," but it lacks that movie's menace.
But Bradley Cooper turns out to be the weakest link as the lead heavy, a weak-tea variant of Gary Oldman 's faux renegade Rasta in "True Romance."
A chase-oriented B-movie that borrows from True Romance for both good and ill, Dax Shepard and David Palmer's Hit and Run benefits from a surprisingly sweet vibe and easygoing chemistry between Shepard and co-star Kristen Bell, both in fine form.
Shoot-outs, lovers on the lam, a villain with dreadlocks: yes, this hit-and miss comedy sure does want to be True Romance .
It may not be the 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T of Vanishing Point, or the 1955 Chevy One-Fifty or 1970 Pontiac GTO of Two-Lane Blacktop, or the 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1 of Gone in 60 Seconds, but comparisons to those cult car movies are no doubt welcome, as far as Shepard is concerned.
Shepard – like Ben Affleck in “The Town” before him- stars in a movie that he wrote and directed as a lifelong criminal who’s a really REALLY nice guy.
Ben Affleck has branched out into directing and has put together three well-critiqued films – Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo (to be released in early 2013).
