As anyone who has read Carver or seen “Short Cuts,” Robert Altman’s brilliant adaptation of several Carver stories, knows, that in a nutshell is the author’s overriding theme.
When Robert Altman did it, he was a veteran director, well-revered himself, and he used nine Carver stories and one poem as the basis for Short Cuts (1993).
Everything Must Go was based on a short story by the prolific American writer Raymond Carver, whose lean, mean stories don’t really lend themselves to feature films (Robert Altman assembled a dozen of them into his mosaic 1993 film Short Cuts).
“Everything Must Go” is based on Carver’s short story “Why Don’t You Dance?” His work was also used in Robert Altman’s 1993’s film “Short Cuts.”
