There have been many different versions of Cinderella throughout the ages, but for this take, Weitz has borrowed primarily from Charles Perrault's 1697 written version Cendrillon and Walt Disney's 1950 animated version.

Given its sheer novelty value (the live-action “Cinderella” released by Disney in 2015 wasn’t really cued to the 1950 cartoon version), the picture seems destined to score decisively at the box office.
And that’s a problem, because the cartoon is already basically perfect: the best and most justly beloved film of the 1990s Disney renaissance, and the only cartoon Disney ever made after the mid-1940s that I would rank alongside their early masterpieces, Snow White , Pinocchio , Fantasia and Bambi .
Like Cinderella, there is also a heroine at the center of Anora whose dreams, hopes, and heartbreak are rendered so vibrantly that the film manages to reach out and wrap you in its embrace.
Enforcing this witty script, which is written by Karey Kirkpatrick (Chicken Run), John O’Farrell and Rachel Tunnard (Military Wives), are the returning characters that we all adored in Chicken Run: Ginger and Rocky are as lovable as always; rats Nick (Romesh Ranganathan, Cinderella) and Fetcher (Daniel Mays, 1917) play even bigger, friendlier roles; Fowler (David Bradley, Pinocchio) and Babs (Jane Horrocks, Sunshine on Leith) shine as brightly as they did in the first film, and are undoubtedly the pick of the bunch.

After stumbling a bit with his fifth film, Model Shop, Demy regained his footing with 1970’s Donkey Skin, a cool, shimmering version of a classic French fairy tale by Cinderella author Charles Perrault.

The 1951 Disney animated feature never quite reached the canonical status of a Cinderella or Snow White; Lewis Carroll’s iconoclastic heroine seemed to resist the plangent, embalming tones of such fare, despite having her own coterie of talking animals and fatalistic queens.
However vacuous, Siegel's questions rupture a dam of nostalgia; Hahn, of course, has to have the last word, veiling a passive-aggressive plug for The Lion King in a toast to the animation giants of yesteryear.
…but Shapiro’s spot seems like Pinocchio’s Pleasure Island. It’ll be fun for a bit, but instead of being turned into a real chef, Syd is going to end up a donkey.

It adds an extra edge, which is saying something, considering how wildly impressive 1940’s Pinocchio from Disney still is as one of their best hand-drawn animated features.
The story beats will be familiar to audiences since the movie mostly splits the difference between Carlo Collodi’s source material, The Adventures of Pinocchio, and the classic 1940s Disney adaptation.
Although it’s credited as a direct adaptation of Collodi’s text, del Toro’s Pinocchio owes as much to the 1940 Disney version, including the central presence of a garrulous insect, here named Sebastian J. Cricket and voiced by Ewan McGregor.
And not just any feature, but Pinocchio (1940), one of the most beloved, impeccable, and technically breathtaking films of Disney’s Golden Age.
Perhaps even more so than Disney’s terrifying 1940 Pinocchio, this stop-motion variation—co-directed by del Toro and animator Mark Gustafson—leans into the more unnerving aspects of a wooden puppet coming to life, while still capturing the fairy-tale wonder at the heart of the tale.
And boy, this is not your Disney “Pinocchio” — not the 1940 classic nor the remake of a few months ago.
