"Only Yesterday" was scripted and directed by Miyazaki's longtime colleague and Studoio Ghibli co-founder, Isao Takahata (now 80), best-known for the 1988 anti-war "Grave of the Fireflies" and the folk-fable "Tale of the Princess Kaguya," which played at Studio on the Square for one week in 2014.
